How Do I Arrange Home Care for Myself or a Family Member?
Arranging home care can feel overwhelming, particularly if you are doing it for the first time or in a moment of crisis. The good news is that the process is simpler than many people expect, and a reputable care provider will guide you through every step.
The first decision is whether to arrange care privately (self-funded) or through your local authority. If you contact your local council's adult social services, they will carry out a needs assessment to determine what level of support is required. If eligible, they may arrange care on your behalf or provide a direct payment so you can choose your own provider.
If you choose to self-arrange โ which gives you greater control over who provides the care and when โ you can contact home care agencies directly. Look for providers registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and check their inspection ratings. A good agency will offer a free initial consultation to understand your needs.
The care assessment is a crucial step. A care manager will visit the person at home to understand their daily routine, health conditions, mobility, cognitive function, and personal preferences. This assessment forms the basis of a personalised care plan that outlines exactly what support will be provided and when.
Once the care plan is agreed, the agency will match appropriate carers to the individual. Factors such as personality, language, cultural background, and specialist skills are considered to ensure the best possible fit. Most agencies aim to start care within a few days of the assessment, though urgent or emergency care can often be arranged within 24 to 48 hours.
At GoCarely, we make the process as straightforward as possible. From your first call, a dedicated care manager will handle everything โ the assessment, care planning, carer matching, and ongoing reviews. We keep families informed at every stage and welcome questions at any time.
