What Is Home Care and What Does It Include?

Home care is professional support provided in a person's own home, enabling them to live independently and comfortably without moving into a residential care facility. It covers a wide spectrum of services tailored to each individual's needs, from light-touch companionship visits to round-the-clock live-in care.

Personal care is one of the most common forms of home care. This includes help with washing, bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting. For many older adults, these tasks become more difficult due to mobility issues, chronic conditions, or the effects of ageing. Having a trained carer assist with personal care preserves dignity while ensuring safety.

Meal preparation and nutrition support are another key part of home care. Carers can plan and cook balanced meals, assist with feeding where necessary, and ensure the person is eating and drinking enough throughout the day. This is particularly important for individuals with conditions such as dementia, where forgetting to eat is common.

Medication management is a critical service. Carers can prompt and remind the person to take their medication at the correct times, ensure prescriptions are collected, and monitor for any side effects. While carers cannot prescribe or administer injectable medication (unless specifically trained), they play a vital role in day-to-day medication adherence.

Home care also extends to domestic support โ€” light housekeeping, laundry, bed-making, and keeping the living environment clean and safe. Shopping, running errands, and accompanying the person to appointments or social activities are also commonly included.

Companionship is an often-overlooked but essential element of home care. Loneliness and social isolation are significant health risks for older adults. A regular carer visit provides meaningful social interaction, stimulation, and emotional support.

At GoCarely, our home care packages are fully personalised. Following an initial assessment, we create a care plan that reflects the individual's preferences, routines, and clinical needs. Whether you need a few hours of help each week or comprehensive daily support, home care can be shaped around you.
